I shoot with the Sony A9ii and the Sony A7R4, both of which have animal eye focus as well as human eye focus. The human eye focus works amazingly well but I hadn’t done much testing of the animal side of things.
We took our dogs and the camera out to test this function. I would say that the only downside is that you have to choose animal or human eye focus, there is no combined “catch all” setting at the moment
With the eye focus turned off the camera locked on to the body of our collie and the eye was just slightly out of focus but with the eye focus turned on it was spot on each time.
Our collie is relatively slow compared to our cocker spaniel and even with her dashing about like a mad thing the camera got some fab results.
If you have a Sony camera that supports animal eye focus give it a go, it’s well worth it
