Aerial Photography at Flamingo Land in North Yorkshire
Recently I was asked by one of my clients to go to Flamingo Land to take a series of staff photos from the air and also some aerial photographs and aerial videography of a new show that was being performed for the first time at the Pirate Boat.
Drone Safety, Risk Assessment and Pre Flight Survey
Having received the permission of the park management to take off and land from their property and having had a look on Google Earth I arrived on site early one morning.
Even before getting the drone out of the car it is always safety first. A walking survey of the site and a risk assessment was done to look for things like telephone cables, pylons, public footpaths.
Once all the paperwork was done it was time to get the drone prepped and carry out the pre flight checks and then some in flight handling checks. It can sometimes take as long or longer to do all the ground work than it takes to fly the projects I work on.
But if you do the pre flight preparation correctly the flying is just a matter of putting the aircraft where you have planned to get the shots needed.
This was a relatively easy task to fly; the staff had been briefed and there was plenty of space to take off and land safely and the shoot was being done before the public was allowed in to the park so everything was nicely controlled.
Once the aerial photographs had been done I landed, changed the battery and then took off again to record the new show in 4k video.
